For many women, abuse does not end when they leave the relationship. It can continue through the family courts, where perpetrators may use the legal system and arrangements involving their children to maintain a level of control.

SATEDA supports over 800 women every year through family court proceedings across Kent.

Many survivors are forced to navigate the system alone while facing ongoing abuse, financial hardship, and serious safety concerns. Kent is widely described as a “legal aid desert”, with very few publicly funded legal advice services available.

Some examples of domestic abuse cases that may end up in family court include situations where an abuser creates conflict around a child’s schooling or medical care using a Specific Issue Order, or where a woman needs a Non‑Molestation Order to stop threats, harassment, or unwanted contact and to secure safe arrangements for her children.
