Healing Together

The Healing Together programme supports young people aged 7-16 understand how their body and brain work so they can manage their emotions and feel calmer and safer as they recover from domestic abuse.

About the programme

Children and young people are victims of domestic abuse in their own right and what they have seen, heard, felt and lived with can have long-lasting impacts on their mental health and the way they experience life.

Healing Together is a programme aimed at supporting children to connect with themselves, by focusing on helping them learn about how their body and brain work together to help them feel safe and calm over the course of 6 weekly sessions.

Children are not asked to talk about their experiences of domestic abuse during these sessions.Β

What happens during the sessions?

Overview of how a session unfolds

Each session starts and ends with an emotional check – ‘how are you feeling right now?’ followed by grounding exercises like calm breathing. We use short, animated videos and resource sheets on various topics which help start discussions with the young person and note down any wisdom they found useful in the session to take home.

Topics covered in the sessions include:

🌬 Calm breathing
🧠 Our body and brain working together
πŸ‘ Our senses
πŸ”Ž Finding feelings
πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ Bringing calmness to our body and brain
☺️ Feeling safe and well

Healing Together is for young people aged 7-16 who have been impacted by domestic abuse.

The programme runs during term time, and the sessions take place in school during school hours or an alternative setting if the young person isn’t attending school.

Our Young People’s Support Workers make arrangements with the school to start sessions once they’ve spoken with and receive consent from the parent and young people about the programme. The sessions are then delivered weekly, for 60-minutes.

We mostly deliver this programme on a 1-1 basis.

The groups are small and informal with a maximum of 6 young people per group.

Yes, all the services we provide to women and children are free thanks to grants and fundraisers.

Healing Together has been funded by Children in Need.

To help cover our costs and enable more women to benefit please consider donating where you can.
